Types of wood

Olive Ash

The sides of our boxes are made from solid Olive Ash. As a natural material Ash comes in a variety of shades, the grain can be fine and pale to streaked through with stripes of brown.

The lids are veneered with carefully selected thin layers of wood, please see below for further details on veneers used for each box.

All of our boxes are also lined with solid walnut and the bottoms are felted.

Please note: since wood is a natural product, each box is completely unique and is likely to differ in both pattern and shade from the photographs on our website. These are designed to be indicative of a given type of wood in general.

Burr Elm

Burr Elm is cut from the protruding growths on a tree which have grown as if in a deformed manner;  some trees are heavily burred almost all the way to their heart and all along their length while others have small numbers of individual burrs protruding.

Burr Elm is a warm reddy-brown colour, the darker burrs create a unique wild knotty pattern.

Burr Ash

Burr Ash is a pale in colour ranging from white to pale cream, it contains small black knots which create a beautiful and unique detailing on our box lids.

Occasionally Burr Ash can show a lovely ripple effect throughout the veneer and the knot detailing can create a beautiful and unique finish to our box lids.

Each piece of veneer is hand selected before your box is made to ensure the best quality and pattern in the wood grain is used for each lid.

Burr Walnut Pentagon Box.JPG

Burr Walnut

Burr Walnut has been used to make furniture for 100's of years and is completely distinct from other woods, with the grain consistently being heavily figured with wild shapes and patterns.

The colour of this wood does vary according to the pattern and ratio between light and dark wood, but the overall effect is usually a rich dark brown with swirls of black and flashes of lighter browns.

Masur Birch

Masur Birch is a slow growing, short tree with a trunk covered by distinctive bumps and ridges that conceal a wood with a marble-like pattern. The most prominent patterns are under bark that shows a kind of bursting and cracking.

The creamy, golden color with occasional dark brown streaking yields stunning contrast for and beautiful pattern detailing on our box lids.

Twisted Design

Our Black and White designs are made from a mix of Maple and Fumed Oak.

Maple is a close grained veneer, which varies from creamy white to a pink tinged light yellow wood.

Fumed Oak is created by treating it with ammonia. The fuming process reacts with the acid in the wood, changing the colour to various shades of grey-brown to almost black.

The creamy colour of the Maple contrasts well with the dense blackness of the Fumed Oak.
